Type G Plugs: US and EU Travellers Need an Adapter

Malta is in the EU. But UK, US, AU, and Canadian Travellers Still Need a Local Data Plan

EU roaming rules let EU-resident travellers use their home mobile data plans in Malta without extra charges, but those rules only apply within the EU for EU-issued SIM cards. Travellers arriving from the UK (post-Brexit), the US, Australia, Canada, or any non-EU country pay their home carrier’s international roaming rate.

Malta’s three local carriers are Epic, GO Mobile, and Melita. Most travel eSIM providers connect to at least two of these networks, ensuring solid fallback coverage across Malta, Gozo, and the coastal areas.

Left-Hand Traffic and Narrow Roads

Which catches many visitors from continental Europe and North America off guard. The roads are narrow by European standards: many lanes in Valletta, Mdina, and rural Gozo are single-track with stone walls on both sides and no room for error.

The UK FCDO advises travellers that local driving standards are poor and many roads are in poor condition. If you are renting a car, drive slowly through villages.

Buses, however, reach almost every corner of Malta and Gozo, making a rental car optional for most tourists.

Bus Fares Are Fixed. No Need to Haggle

Malta Public Transport (the tallinja network) runs 127 bus routes across both Malta and Gozo with fixed government fares. A single journey costs €2.00 in winter (through mid-June) and €2.50 in summer, paid in cash or by contactless card on the bus.

For visitors staying a week, the 7-day unlimited travel card at €27 covers all day and night routes including the Airport Direct service. Cards are sold at the airport welcomers’ hall, the Valletta terminal, and at Agenda Bookshops and WH Smith outlets across the islands.

Gozo Ferry Is a €4.65 Fixed-Price Crossing. Not a Tourist Boat

The Gozo Channel ferry between Ċirkewwa (Malta) and Mġarr (Gozo) runs roughly every 45 minutes during the day and costs €4.65 for a standard adult foot passenger. The crossing takes about 25 minutes and operates 24 hours on most days.

Vehicles pay separately and tickets are only validated on the Gozo side. Payment is accepted by card or cash at the ticket booths.

The ferry has free Wi-Fi on board, and GO Mobile / Epic signals generally reach the boat. So you will not lose data coverage mid-crossing, though speeds may dip in the channel.

A fast high-speed catamaran (Gozo HighSpeed) run by Malta Public Transport offers a quicker alternative, included in some Explore Flex travel card bundles.

Paceville Is Malta’s Nightlife District. Keep Drinks in Sight

The UK FCDO specifically flags the Paceville district in St Julian’s as an area where drink spiking has occurred at some bars and gentlemen’s clubs. Criminals have forced victims to spend large amounts of money or assaulted them.

Keep your drink in sight, buy your own drinks, and check your bill carefully. The rest of Malta is generally safe for tourists.

Crime rates against visitors are low. But pickpocketing has been reported on crowded bus routes between Valletta and St Julian’s during summer.

Cannabis: Legal at Home for Maltese Residents, Not for Tourists in Public

Malta legalised cannabis cultivation and personal use at home in 2021, but smoking in public is illegal and carries a fine. As a tourist, possession of cannabis.

Even small amounts for personal use. Can result in heavy fines, a long jail sentence, and a Schengen ban of up to five years.

Do not assume the rules that apply to Maltese residents apply to visitors. Malta’s airport has sophisticated scanning technology and uses it on all passengers including those in transit.

Official Taxi Is Malta Taxi. Bolt Also Operates

The official licensed taxi operator at Malta International Airport is Malta Taxi, which is the only taxi service allowed to pick up from the arrivals hall. Malta Taxi has its own app for pre-booking and fare calculation.

Bolt also operates in Malta for pick-up outside the taxi rank zone and is generally cheaper for non-airport journeys around Valletta, Sliema, and St Julian’s. Uber does not operate in Malta.

ECabs is another local ride-hailing app widely used by residents. Do not use unmarked or unlicensed taxis, especially at the airport.

How To Travel Around Malta

Malta Public Transport operates 127 bus routes under the tallinja brand, covering Malta and Gozo with 500 buses. For visitors, the simplest option is a 7-day unlimited travel card for €27, which covers all day routes, night routes, and the Airport Direct service.

Single bus journeys cost €2.00 in winter (October to mid-June) and €2.50 in summer, payable by contactless bank card, smartphone, or cash directly to the driver. Tickets are valid for two hours from purchase, allowing free transfers within that window.

The tallinja app (iOS and Android) offers live GPS bus tracking, real-time alerts, journey planning, and card management. Download it before you fly.

Getting to Gozo requires taking the Gozo Channel ferry from Ċirkewwa in the north of Malta to Mġarr harbour in Gozo. A 25-minute crossing that costs €4.65 per adult foot passenger each way.

Ferries run roughly every 45 minutes around the clock and have free on-board Wi-Fi. For the crossing itself, both GO Mobile and Epic networks typically maintain signal from the Maltese shore, though speeds may drop in the middle of the channel.

The faster Gozo HighSpeed catamaran, run by Malta Public Transport, reduces crossing time further and is included in the Explore Flex travel card bundles available from Malta Public Transport sales offices.

For taxis, Malta’s official airport operator is Malta Taxi. The only licensed service permitted in the arrivals hall, with app-based booking and upfront fares.

Bolt operates across the islands for general ride-hailing outside the airport zone and is usually cheaper for short city hops. ECabs (available on iOS and Android) is the local app most used by residents and is reliable for journeys across both Malta and Gozo.

Note that Uber does not operate in Malta. Driving yourself is possible.

the UK FCDO notes that UK photocard driving licences are valid, but roads are narrow, local driving standards are poor, and many rural areas have no roadside lighting. Left-hand traffic also applies.

Getting to the Blue Lagoon on Comino requires a private boat tour or ferry from Ċirkewwa or from Gozo’s Mġarr harbour. There is no public bus service to Comino as the island has no public roads and a permanent population of only a few people.

Day-trip boats run from spring to early autumn and typically depart in the morning for return trips in the late afternoon. Because Comino has no permanent infrastructure, mobile coverage on the island itself is weak and unreliable.

Most travellers report that their signal comes and goes depending on which part of the island they are standing in. Download maps offline before you leave the mainland.

Money: How Payments Actually Work

Malta is a Eurozone country, so the currency is the euro (€). Contactless card payment.

Including Apple Pay and Google Pay. Is widely accepted in Valletta, Sliema, St Julian’s, Mdina, and most tourist-facing businesses.

Malta’s public buses accept contactless bank cards directly on the bus, so you do not need cash for transport. Most restaurants, hotels, and supermarkets in urban areas process cards without issue.

ATMs are available across the island including inside the arrivals hall at Malta International Airport and in the Departures area.

Cash becomes more important once you leave the main tourist centres. The Marsaxlokk Sunday fish market, rural Gozo villages, smaller roadside kiosks, water taxi operators, boat tour providers, and market stalls in smaller towns often operate cash-only or prefer it.

Gozo is notably more cash-dependent than the main island. Smaller guesthouses, farm-to-table restaurants, and village shops in areas like Xlendi, Marsalforn, and the Citadel area of Victoria may not accept cards at all.

Withdraw euros in Malta before heading to Gozo if you plan to spend time exploring rural areas of the sister island.

Tipping is not mandatory in Malta but is appreciated for good service. In restaurants, leaving 10% of the bill is the norm when service has been good.

Check first whether a service charge has already been included, as some Valletta restaurants add it automatically. Taxi fares are metered or app-calculated, so tipping is optional; rounding up to the nearest euro is customary.

Tour guides who provide private or small-group experiences typically expect a tip of €5, €10 per person for a half-day tour. Tipping at bars is not expected unless you are running a tab at a higher-end venue.

There is no social pressure around tipping in Malta the way there is in the US.

The biggest mistake travellers make is underestimating the amount of data they need, then burning through a 1GB plan before lunch on day one. Here is what real activities consume per hour:

Activating Your eSIM on Arrival

Malta International Airport (MLA) offers free unlimited Wi-Fi under the network name ‘Maltairport Wi-Fi’ throughout the terminal. Connect, accept terms in your browser, and you are online. The signal is available in the Arrivals hall, Check-In Hall, Departures areas, and the Food Court.

This makes MLA one of the better airports for eSIM activation on arrival: you can connect to the airport Wi-Fi, scan your QR code, install your eSIM profile, enable data roaming, and switch to your travel plan before you even reach the taxi rank. The airport also has multiple device charging stations throughout the terminal. In the Check-In Hall at Costa Coffee and Dr.

Juice, in the Departures area near Gate 1, and in the Food Court. So you can charge your phone if you arrive with a flat battery. There is a Malta Public Transport ticketing office inside the Welcomers’ Hall in Arrivals where you can pick up a tallinja travel card.

The official airport taxi service (Malta Taxi) has a dedicated desk in arrivals. Note that carrier retail shops from GO Mobile, Epic, or Melita are not prominently present in the MLA arrivals hall. If you want a physical SIM from a local carrier, you will need to visit a carrier shop in Valletta or Sliema after arriving.

Phone Numbers and SMS

Most travel eSIMs for Malta, including eSIM4, are data-only. They provide mobile internet but not a local phone number or SMS.

In practice this is rarely a problem in Malta. WhatsApp is the default communication tool for Maltese residents and businesses.

Guesthouses, restaurants, tour operators, and taxi drivers all use it.

FaceTime Audio (for Apple users) and Google Meet work well on Malta’s 4G/5G networks. For two-factor authentication (2FA) SMS codes tied to your home number, keep your home SIM active in a second SIM slot if your phone supports dual-SIM, or use an app-based authenticator (Google Authenticator, Authy) before you leave home.

Malta’s emergency number is 112 (European standard). This works from any phone, including data-only eSIM devices, as emergency calls are always routed regardless of SIM status.

• MdinaThe Silent City is a walled medieval town on a hilltop in central Malta. • GozoThe sister island has solid 4G coverage in Victoria (Rabat), Xlendi, Marsalforn, and the ferry terminal at Mġarr. Coverage in the interior of Gozo and along the more remote cliff-top paths (such as the Azure Window site at Dwejra) can be patchier than on the main island. GO Mobile and Epic both cover Gozo. Gozo is more rural than Malta and ATMs are fewer. Make sure you have cash before leaving Victoria.
• Comino / Blue LagoonComino has no permanent public infrastructure. Mobile coverage on the island is unreliable and patchy. Some travellers report getting signal from the Malta or Gozo towers depending on which part of the island they stand on, while others get no data at all. The Blue Lagoon itself (in the bay between Comino and the uninhabited Cominotto islet) is a known dead zone for mobile data. Download your maps and any content you need before you board the boat from Ċirkewwa. The island has no shops, ATMs, or power outlets. Carry water, cash for the beach kiosk, and a power bank for your phone.
• MarsaxlokkThis traditional fishing village on the southeast coast of Malta hosts a famous Sunday fish and food market. Coverage is strong throughout the village and along the waterfront. Many market stalls are cash-only, so bring euros. The bus from Valletta (routes 81/85) serves Marsaxlokk. Your eSIM will work fine for mapping and photos along the colourful harbour full of traditional luzzu fishing boats.
• Sliema / St Julian’sThe most tourist-dense area of Malta, stretching north from Valletta along the coast.
