MB WAY is Portugal’s Pix/Venmo and it’s largely locked to +351 phone numbers

Portugal’s dominant mobile-payment app is MB WAY, run by SIBS, and it’s how locals split bills, pay tradespeople, and tip anyone who runs a stall. The catch for tourists: the service is primarily designed for Portuguese users and most customers register with a +351 Portuguese mobile number.

Even though SIBS quietly rolled out cross-border MB WAY transfers with Spain’s Bizum and Italy’s Bancomat Pay during 2025, the feature only works if you already have a Portuguese MB WAY account linked to a Portuguese IBAN. Tourists without a Portuguese SIM or bank will default to contactless card, which works almost everywhere anyway.

Bolt is cheaper than Uber in Lisbon and Porto. Often dramatically

Both apps work in Portugal, but Bolt is the local default. Bolt takes a smaller commission from drivers so drivers tend to prefer it, and riders report Bolt fares running noticeably below Uber on the same route.

Travellers on the Lisbon airport run typically see Bolt quoted at roughly two-thirds the Uber price. The practical play is to install both and compare quotes each trip.

Euronet ATMs will skin you. Use Multibanco-branded ATMs instead

A ‘bica’ in Lisbon is a ‘cimbalino’ in Porto. Same drink, regional names

Order coffee wrong and locals will smile but clock you as a tourist. Espresso is called ‘uma bica’ in Lisbon (folk etymology: ‘Beba Isto Com Açúcar’.

Drink this with sugar) and ‘um cimbalino’ in Porto, named for the La Cimbali machines that flooded the north. Safe default: ‘um café’ works nationwide.

A bica/café is never filled to the brim. If you want more water say ‘cheio’, less water ‘curto’.

Silence during Fado is mandatory. Waiters stop serving mid-song

Walking into a Fado restaurant expecting background dinner music is the fastest way to get shushed by a room full of Portuguese grandmothers. When a fadista takes the floor, conversation stops, service stops, and even pouring wine stops until the song ends.

The formula ‘Silêncio, que se vai cantar o Fado’ is a genuine house rule, not a cliché. Clap only at the end of each song.

Never along to rhythm because Fado tempos shift deliberately. No flash photography, and most traditional houses in Alfama and Mouraria expect you to dress up rather than show up in shorts and flip-flops.

Madeira and the Azores use the same mobile networks as the mainland

Money: How Payments Actually Work

Portugal is heavily card-friendly. Contactless Visa/Mastercard works on almost every café counter, market stall, and bus ticket machine, and Apple Pay/Google Pay are widely accepted.

Cash is still useful for small-town markets, tiny tascas, and leaving tips, because many Portuguese card terminals don’t let you add a tip to the card payment. The server needs the coins directly.

Keep €20, €40 in small notes for the first day and top up at a Multibanco ATM only when needed.

Tipping expectation is low by US standards. Around 5, 10% in sit-down restaurants is generous and appreciated but not expected, and rounding up the bill in cafés, taxis, and bars is considered normal.

Service charge is only auto-added in a minority of high-end venues and will be listed as ‘serviço incluído’ on the bill. Tipping 15, 20% the way Americans tip at home is not required and can actually feel awkward to Portuguese staff.
