Bizum: the payment rail tourists can’t access

Spain runs on Bizum, a bank-to-bank instant-payment app with more than 30 million users (roughly 60% of the population) that locals use to split tapas bills, pay street markets and settle anything under a few hundred euros. The catch for visitors: Bizum is tied to a Spanish IBAN, so US, UK and AU travelers can’t register and can’t receive a Bizum.

Expect mild friction when a Spanish friend offers “Te hago un Bizum” for your half of dinner. Ask for cash or a standard card transfer instead.

From May 2026, Bizum goes contactless in physical shops, further widening the gap between locals and tourists at the till.

Meal times are shifted three hours later than you expect

Jet-lagged tourists who wander out at 7 pm looking for dinner in Madrid or Seville will find shuttered kitchens. Lunch runs roughly 2 pm, 4 pm and dinner doesn’t start until 9 pm, with locals often sitting down closer to 10 pm.

Small shops and boutiques in residential neighborhoods still close between 2 pm and 5 pm for siesta, and most of Spain outside major tourist zones shuts on Sundays. In tourist areas you’ll always find someone serving tapas, but you’ll pay a premium and eat beside other confused foreigners.

ETIAS arrives Q4 2026. US/UK/AU travelers need to apply before boarding

The long-delayed European Travel Information and Authorisation System is scheduled to launch in the last quarter of 2026. Once live, all visa-exempt visitors.

Including US, UK, Canadian and Australian passport holders. Must hold an approved ETIAS before flying to Spain or any Schengen country.

The application is online, takes under 20 minutes and costs €20 (free for under-18s and over-70s). Passports must be valid at least three months beyond your departure date and ideally contain a biometric chip.

Most approvals come back within minutes, but allow up to 30 days for extra checks.

Barcelona’s pickpocket problem is Europe’s worst. And it’s concentrated

Violent crime is rare, but petty theft in Barcelona is an open secret. Hotspots are La Rambla, Barceloneta beach, Sagrada Família, Park Güell and metro lines L3 and L4.

Classic plays include the shell game on Las Ramblas (every spectator is a shill), the bird-poop distraction where someone “helps” clean you while an accomplice lifts your wallet, and the clipboard petition swarm. Zip everything, keep phones and wallets front-facing, and don’t put bags on the floor at tapas bars.

Madrid and Seville have the same scams at lower intensity. The Lucky Rosemary grannies in Plaza Mayor are almost a rite of passage.

Catalan, Basque and Galician. Spanish isn’t always enough

Spain has four co-official languages alongside Castilian Spanish: Catalan (Barcelona, Valencia, Balearic Islands), Basque/Euskara (Bilbao, San Sebastián, Pamplona) and Galician (Santiago de Compostela, A Coruña). Menus, street signs and transit announcements frequently appear in the regional language first.

Google Translate’s camera mode handles Catalan and Galician cleanly; Basque is a language isolate unrelated to any other in Europe, so lean on the app. Spanish still works everywhere, but a “Bon dia” in Barcelona or “Kaixo” in Bilbao buys genuine goodwill.

Three competing high-speed operators on Madrid, Barcelona. Book direct, not via resellers

Spain is the first country in Europe with three competing high-speed rail operators on the same tracks: state-owned Renfe (AVE + low-cost Avlo), Italian-Spanish joint venture Iryo (Frecciarossa 1000 trains), and French low-cost Ouigo. Competition has pushed Madrid, Barcelona fares as low as €9 on Ouigo and Avlo when booked early.

Fake Renfe ticket sites are a common scam. always book via renfe.com, iryo.eu or ouigo.com directly.

Luggage rules differ: Ouigo charges for anything above a small bag, Iryo and AVE are more generous. Don’t book through third-party resellers who tack on 20, 30% fees.

Real paella is a lunchtime dish from Valencia. Not a dinner in Madrid

Tourist menus across Barcelona and Madrid sell paella as a dinner special. Locals will tell you this is the first red flag: authentic paella is a lunchtime dish, cooked fresh and eaten at midday, and it’s a Valencian specialty, not a Madrid or Barcelona one.

Avoid restaurants with photos of food on the menu, multilingual menus without prices, or waiters hustling you in from the street. Chalkboard “daily specials” written only in English and without prices are a classic upsell trap.

Ask for the number before ordering.

Tipping is a rounding gesture, not a 20% obligation

Coming from the US, resist the urge to default-tip 20%. In Spain there’s no legal obligation to tip, and servers are paid a proper wage.

Round up the bill or leave 5, 10% for good service in a sit-down restaurant; a euro or two is plenty at tapas bars and cafés, and locals often just leave the coin change. Taxis round up to the next euro.

Critically, tip in cash, not on the card. Card tips often don’t reach the server.

Getting Around

Cabify Beats Uber in Spain. FreeNow Beats Both for Taxis

Uber exists in Spain but is the weakest player, operating under VTC licenses in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and a handful of other cities. And in Barcelona it actually dispatches licensed taxis rather than private cars.

Cabify is the dominant local challenger, Spanish-founded, generally cleaner vehicles, and often cheaper than Uber at surge times. For street-hail-style taxi booking, FreeNow is the most reliable app in Barcelona and covers Madrid, Málaga, Valencia, Alicante, Zaragoza, Seville, Granada, Castellón and Asturias.

Bolt is gaining ground in Madrid and Barcelona with aggressive pricing but thinner coverage.

Three High-Speed Train Operators Compete on Madrid-Barcelona

Trains are the best way to cross Spain. The Madrid, Barcelona corridor is served by three operators competing directly: Renfe’s AVE (premium) and Avlo (low-cost), Iryo (Italian Frecciarossa trains), and Ouigo (French low-cost).

Book 2, 3 months ahead for the best fares. Ouigo and Avlo routinely sell €9, 19 seats.

Download the Renfe app for tickets and boarding passes; Iryo and Ouigo have their own apps. Airport-style security scans luggage before boarding at major stations.

City Metro Cards: Hola Barcelona Beats T-Casual at the Airport

Barcelona’s TMB metro and bus network runs on the reloadable T-mobilitat card. The best tourist option is the Hola Barcelona Travel Card (€18.70 for 48 hours, €27.30 for 72 hours in 2026) because it includes the airport metro link L9 Sud, which the regular T-Casual 10-trip card (€13 in 2026) does not.

Madrid uses the contactless Multi card. A one-time €2.50 purchase loaded with single tickets or 10-trip Metrobús passes.

Orange Leads 5G Reach, Vodafone Wins Speed Tests

Spain’s mobile market is dominated by four MNOs: MásOrange (the merged Orange + MásMóvil entity), Movistar (Telefónica), Vodafone and Yoigo. Orange leads 5G reach at over 90% population coverage, with Vodafone typically winning download-speed tests.

Spain’s 2G network is being shut down. Movistar and Orange have already announced sunset timelines, so bring a handset that supports VoLTE (4G voice) or you risk no voice service on an eSIM.

EU roaming is free for EU SIMs, but US/UK/AU travelers will hit enormous roaming bills on their home plans and should use an eSIM.

Money: How Payments Actually Work

Contactless Works Everywhere. Use Revolut or Wise to Avoid FX Fees

Contactless card payments are universal in Spanish cities. Apple Pay, Google Pay and Visa/Mastercard contactless work at virtually every café, metro gate and supermarket. Neobanks like Revolut and Wise are the move for US/UK/AU travelers because they avoid the 2, 3% foreign-transaction fees that most home-country cards tack on, and they let you hold euros directly at the mid-market rate.

Cash Still Rules in Rural Bars, Small-Town Taxis and Tips

Cash is still king in three pockets: small rural taperías and village bars, small-town taxis that claim the card machine “isn’t working”, and tips. Carry €30, 50 in small notes and coins.

ATMs are everywhere. stick to bank-branded ATMs (BBVA, Santander, CaixaBank, Sabadell) and always decline “dynamic currency conversion” (DCC).

Choosing to be charged in euros rather than your home currency saves you 5, 10% every withdrawal.

Bizum Rules Peer-to-Peer but Blocks Tourists

Bizum dominates peer-to-peer payments in Spain with around 30 million users, but it only links to Spanish IBANs, so tourists cannot register. If a local offers to “Bizum” you back for a split bill, suggest cash or a card transfer via Revolut/Wise instead. From May 2026 Bizum is rolling out contactless in-shop payment, which will widen the payment-experience gap between residents and visitors.

Tipping Is a Rounding Gesture. Hand It in Cash

Tipping in Spain is optional and modest. Round up at cafés and tapas bars, 5, 10% in a proper sit-down restaurant, a euro per bag for hotel porters, and round up taxi fares to the nearest euro.

Spaniards themselves often leave only coin change. Crucially, hand tips in cash rather than adding them to card payments.

Card tips frequently don’t reach the server.

How Much Data You Actually Need

The biggest mistake travellers make is underestimating the amount of data they need, then burning through a 1GB plan before lunch on day one. Here is what real activities consume per hour:

Activating Your eSIM on Arrival

Both major gateways offer free public Wi-Fi with no time cap. Madrid-Barajas (MAD) provides complimentary Wi-Fi across all terminals including T4 and T4S, the widebody hub where most transatlantic flights arrive.

Connect to the SSID “freewifi.aena.es”. Barcelona-El Prat (BCN) also runs AENA’s free Wi-Fi service across T1 and T2.

Activate your eSIM on airport Wi-Fi before you leave the arrivals hall so the QR scan, IMEI registration and first data session all complete on a stable connection. Once outside, your device will prefer whichever of the four Spanish carriers (MásOrange, Movistar, Vodafone or Yoigo) your eSIM plan partners with.

Orange and Movistar give the broadest 5G reach with over 90% population coverage, while Vodafone consistently tops download-speed tests around 100+ Mbps in cities. Airport arrivals halls can sit on slower 4G. Step outside the terminal if your speed test looks weak.

Phone Numbers and SMS

Keep your home SIM active on a second slot (or as the secondary eSIM) purely for 2FA and critical SMS from your bank. Many US, UK and AU banks still only send security codes to your registered mobile number and will not accept international VOIP. Data-route that home line or leave it in ‘SMS only’ mode to avoid runaway roaming charges, while your Spain eSIM carries the data workload.

For voice and group chat, Spaniards live on WhatsApp. It’s the default channel for everything from restaurant bookings to tour operators confirming pickups.

FaceTime and Google Meet work fine over the eSIM’s 5G. Revolut and Wise both issue virtual phone numbers (region-limited) that can receive SMS for service sign-ups if you need one.

In any real emergency, dial 112. Spain’s pan-EU emergency number. It works from any phone regardless of SIM status, even without credit or a local network, and connects you to English-speaking operators who triage police, ambulance or fire.
