Your Phone Will Get Bricked on a Turkish SIM After 120 Days

Turkey runs a device-level IMEI registry that few other countries operate: any foreign handset put onto a Turkish domestic SIM/eSIM is given a 120-day grace window, after which the network cuts service to that IMEI until you pay the IMEI registration tax. Roughly 45,614 TL in 2025, which sits above ~$1,300.

Eligibility is also restricted: only Turkish citizens and foreigners with a residence permit (YKN) and e-Devlet access can actually complete the paperwork, so a normal tourist cannot register even if they wanted to. The painless fix is to skip Turkish domestic lines altogether.

Turkey Blocked 30+ eSIM Provider Websites in July 2025. Install Before You Fly

On 10 July 2025, Turkey’s telecoms regulator BTK restricted access to the websites and apps of more than 30 international eSIM providers including Airalo, Holafly, Saily, Nomad, Ubigi, GigSky and aloSIM under a data-localisation ruling. The critical nuance: the data connection itself is not blocked.

Only the vendor websites and apps, so a pre-activated eSIM installed before you land in Istanbul will work fine. If you wait until after arrival you won’t be able to open the vendor’s app to buy or top up.

Wikipedia, X and WhatsApp Have All Been Blocked Here. VPNs Are Legal but Throttled

Turkey has a long record of throwing platform-wide kill-switches during political or security events. Wikipedia, Twitter/X, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram and TikTok have all faced temporary or extended blocks, usually lasting hours to several days after protests or terror incidents.

VPNs are still technically legal for tourists. there are no reported prosecutions of travellers using VPNs in Turkey.

But the regulator has gone after the providers themselves. BTK blocked 27 popular VPN services in 2024, including ProtonVPN, Surfshark, TunnelBear, CyberGhost, IPVanish and Psiphon.

Download a paid VPN before you fly, keep its obfuscation/stealth mode on, and don’t rely on free VPNs. Most are blocked at DNS level inside Turkcell and Türk Telekom networks.

The 5 and 50 Lira Notes Look Almost Identical. This Is a Scam Engine

The 5 TL note and the 50 TL note both trend purple-pink and drivers exploit this to short-change tourists. The classic switch: you hand over a 50 for a 15 TL fare, the driver palms it, holds up a 5 and asks for the rest.

Counterfeits make it worse. 50 and 100 TL notes are the most-faked denominations and the UK FCDO warns that even banks may refuse 50 and 100 USD bills you arrive with because of counterfeit volume.

Say the denomination out loud (“this is a fifty”) when you hand over cash, pay by card in taxis wherever possible, and refuse any 50/100 USD notes in change.

Shops Can’t Sell Alcohol After 10pm. Restaurants Can

A 2013 law that is still fully enforced bans retail alcohol sales at Tekel shops, supermarkets and corner stores between 22:00 and 06:00. “Alcohol can be sold in markets only between 6am and 10pm, but there is no time limit in restaurants, bars, etc.” Licensed bars and restaurants are exempt and pour all night, but if you wander into a Migros or BIM at 10:05pm looking for a bottle of Efes, the shelves will be physically roped off. Stock up earlier or drink where someone can legally pour it.

The UK FCDO also flags methanol poisoning from counterfeit branded spirits. Stick to sealed bottles from licensed venues.

5G Just Launched in April 2026. But Only in Provincial Centres

Turkey ran its 5G auction in October 2025 and flipped the switch on 1 April 2026, so guides written even 12 months ago are already wrong. Turkcell, Vodafone Turkey and Türk Telekom simultaneously launched 5G across all 81 provincial capitals with a target of full national coverage within two years.

The auction raised $2.95 billion across 700 MHz and 3.5 GHz bands. Practically, that means Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and Antalya centres have 5G today, but Cappadocia villages, Pamukkale and Black Sea coastal towns are still 4G-only.

And Turkcell remains the strongest rural carrier.

Your Foreign Credit Card Won’t Work on the Marmaray. Get an Istanbulkart

Istanbul lets you tap a contactless Visa/Mastercard directly on most buses, trams and metros now, but the cross-Bosphorus Marmaray commuter rail is the one exception. The Istanbulkart is required on Marmaray, and contactless bank cards are accepted on all other modes except Marmaray.

The card costs ~70 TL as a non-refundable blank and works on buses, trams, metro, funiculars, Marmaray, IETT ferries (İDO), LRT and metrobus. Buy it at any yellow biletmatik vending machine at airports and major metro stops.

They take cash in 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 TL notes and foreign cards work at machines only sometimes; cash is more reliable. Top up inside the official Istanbulkart app if you have NFC.

Cappadocia Balloons Got Grounded 142 Days in 2025. Build a Buffer Night

The Instagram shot you came for is weather-gated and pricey to replace. Turkey’s Civil Aviation Authority (SHGM) records show flights operated on only 223 of 365 days in 2025. Roughly 142 grounded days.

A 12-pilot Meteorological Assessment Group issues colour flags (red = all flights off, yellow = standby, green = individual pilot decision), and sustained winds above 10 km/h automatically scrub the launch. December, February cancellation rates top 50%; August, October is the sweet spot at 7, 17%.

Book at least two mornings in Göreme so a scrub on day one doesn’t kill the plan.

Dolmuş Minibuses: Pass Your Cash Forward to the Driver

The dolmuş is Turkey’s shared minibus. Faster than a bus, cheaper than a taxi, and it runs on a unique social contract.

If you’re sitting in the back, you hand your fare forward to the passenger in front of you and it travels hand-to-hand up to the driver; change comes back the same route. Payment is to the driver once the dolmuş begins its journey and you flag one down anywhere on its fixed route by waving, then say “inecek var” (“there’s someone getting off”) to stop.

Carry small notes (5 or 10 TL); a 200 TL bill will get you a polite glare. Istanbul has been trialling Istanbulkart acceptance on some dolmuş lines but cash is still the norm.

Getting Around

IST vs SAW: Take the Shuttle, Not a Cab Between Airports

Istanbul has two airports on opposite sides of the Bosphorus and mixing them up costs you hours. IST (Istanbul Airport) is on the European side and uses Havaist shuttle buses.

The Taksim route ran ~275 TL in mid-2025, while SAW (Sabiha Gökçen) is on the Asian side and uses Havabus, with the Kadıköy route at ~283.50 TL and a handy drop-off right at the ferry piers. Havaist also runs a direct IST↔SAW coach (HVİST-13) every 90 minutes, taking about 110 minutes end-to-end.

Both shuttles run close to 24/7. Don’t taxi between airports. The meter runs across two bridges and hits $80+ easily.

Get an Istanbulkart. Marmaray Refuses Anything Else

Inside Istanbul, ignore the ticket machines and get an Istanbulkart. It’s the only accepted fare medium on the Marmaray cross-Bosphorus rail, and on everything else.

Bus, tram, metro, funicular, IETT ferry. You can also tap a contactless Visa/Mastercard directly at the reader.

Buy the blank card at any yellow biletmatik machine at IST arrivals, SAW arrivals or major metro stops; the card itself is non-refundable. Top-up is cash-only at most machines (5/10/20/50/100 TL notes, no coins, no change) or via the official Istanbulkart app with NFC if you have an iPhone Xs / recent Android.

Use BiTaksi for Taxis. Uber Only Books Yellow Cabs

For taxis, skip the airport rank and use apps. BiTaksi is the dominant local ride-hailing app.

It connects you to licensed yellow taxis with the meter running and a map track, and Uber in Istanbul exists only as Uber XL / Uber Taxi, routing to the same yellow-cab fleet rather than private cars because of a 2019 court ruling. Yandex Go launched in Ankara, Izmir, Antalya, Mersin and Adana by 2025 and received its Istanbul electronic service licence but hasn’t fully deployed in the city yet, so Ankara and Izmir travellers have a third option Istanbul doesn’t.

The city-run iTaksi app from Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality is the official municipal alternative but coverage is thinner and app stability is hit-and-miss.

Stay in the App. “My App Is Broken” Is a Scam

At IST and SAW, refuse any driver who solicits you inside the terminal and use the official rank or a pre-booked Havaist/Havabus seat. A current scam: you book on BiTaksi or Uber, the driver claims “my app is broken”, cancels the ride and demands a fixed cash price.

Stay in the app, insist on the meter, and if the driver refuses, step out. Another car is 90 seconds away.

Other airport-route tricks include “extra toll” demands (the Eurasia tunnel and bridge tolls are already in the meter) and “long way via E-5” detours. Pin your destination in the app before you get in so the driver can see you’re tracking.

Money: How Payments Actually Work

The Lira Slides Weekly. Menu Prices Are Already Out of Date

The Turkish lira has been in a multi-year slide. Prices reset every few weeks.

So treat any menu you’ve seen online as out of date by the time you read it. Shopkeepers in tourist zones will often list prices in EUR or USD; paying in those currencies is accepted but the exchange rate they use is punishing.

Withdraw lira from an ATM and pay in local currency whenever possible. Contactless card acceptance is near-universal in cities; cash is still king at market stalls, small kebab joints, dolmuş rides and hammams.

Use Major Bank ATMs and Reject DCC

Pick the right ATM. Major banks.

Ziraat, VakıfBank, Halkbank, İş Bankası, Akbank, Garanti BBVA and Yapı Kredi. Are the most reliable and charge lower foreign-card fees.

Many private-bank ATMs charge 7, 15% of the withdrawal as a host fee for foreign cards, so pull larger amounts less often. Always choose “without conversion” / “charge in TRY” when the machine asks about Dynamic Currency Conversion.

Accepting the ATM’s rate typically costs 3, 7% extra on top of the host fee.

Skip the $100 Bills and Street Exchange Booths

The UK FCDO explicitly warns that banks and money exchanges may refuse 50 or 100 US dollar bills because of counterfeits in circulation. If you’re bringing USD or EUR as backup, bring clean, smaller bills (20s) and exchange them at a licensed döviz bureau rather than a hotel desk.

Street exchange booths near Sultanahmet and Taksim have been caught shaving notes off stacks during the count. Ask for the count out loud and recount yourself before walking away.

Tip 5-10% in Lira Cash, Not on the Card

Tipping is lighter than in the US. Restaurants: round up or 5, 10% in casual spots, 10, 15% in mid/fine dining if service is not already added.

Hotel porters: 20, 50 TL per bag or per service; housekeeping 20, 50 TL per day. Taxis: not obligatory.

Most locals just round up to the next 5 or 10 TL. Always tip in Turkish lira cash even if you paid the bill by card; tips added to the card slip often don’t make it to the staff.

How Much Data You Actually Need

The biggest mistake travellers make is underestimating the amount of data they need, then burning through a 1GB plan before lunch on day one. Here is what real activities consume per hour:

Activating Your eSIM on Arrival

Install and activate your eSIM on Wi-Fi BEFORE you land — BTK blocked 30+ eSIM provider websites and apps inside Turkey in July 2025, so if you wait until after arrival you’ll be locked out of the purchase flow. At IST and SAW you’ll walk past Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom kiosks in arrivals — airport tourist packs run 1,115—1,690 TL ($33—$50), a 100%+ markup over city-store prices of 500—700 TL for similar data.

If you’re staying over 120 days on a Turkish SIM your phone gets IMEI-blocked until you register (tourists usually can’t), so an international eSIM that connects as roaming is the safer path. Toggle airplane mode off, switch your line to the new eSIM as primary data under Settings > Cellular, and keep data roaming ON for the eSIM profile.

Phone Numbers and SMS

Your home SMS still arrives on your physical SIM while your data rides the Turkish eSIM — dual-SIM iPhones and Androids let you set eSIM as data and home SIM as calls/SMS at no cost (incoming SMS is free worldwide for most carriers). For new account sign-ups that need a Turkish number (bank apps, some Istanbulkart functions), use a throwaway virtual-number service rather than buying a local SIM, because the 120-day IMEI registration rule will brick your handset on a Turkish line if you stay too long.

WhatsApp calls and FaceTime audio both work on the eSIM data plan; just note WhatsApp has been blocked briefly during past political flashpoints, so keep a backup VPN profile installed.

Where You Will Actually Use Your eSIM

• Istanbul: Navigating Sultanahmet/BeyoÄŸlu/Kadıköy on Moovit for metro/tram/ferry routing, tapping into Marmaray with Istanbulkart, booking BiTaksi across the Bosphorus bridges, Google-Translating menus off tourist strips, and Getir orders to your AirBnB at 2am. Strong 5G across European and Asian side centres post April 2026.
• Cappadocia (Göreme, Ãœrgüp, Uçhisar): Refreshing the SHGM balloon flight-status page at 4am to see if the flag is red or green, offline-map navigation in the valleys between Love Valley and Red Valley where 4G fades, and WhatsApp-ing your hotel pickup. Still 4G in 2026 — no 5G.
• Antalya / KaÅŸ / Mediterranean coast: Google Maps for the D400 coast road, Turkcell 4G/5G along the beach strips, BiTaksi into the old town of Kaleiçi, and checking ferry schedules to the Greek islands. Turkcell has the strongest coast-to-interior handoff when you drive inland toward Pamukkale.
• Pamukkale & Ephesus (Denizli / Izmir region): Checking the Hierapolis closing time, streaming a walking podcast across the travertines, and calling a shared dolmuÅŸ from Pamukkale village to the travertines. Good 4G; 5G in Izmir city from April 2026.
• Ankara: Yandex Go is fully live here ahead of Istanbul, so you’ll use it instead of BiTaksi; mapping the Anıtkabir and Ulus on Moovit; and 5G across the city centre since April 2026.
• Izmir / Aegean coast: 5G in the city, BiTaksi + Yandex Go both working, ferries to ÇeÅŸme and Alaçatı where you’ll want offline maps, and Yemeksepeti for delivery in the resort towns where walking to a restaurant is 20 minutes uphill.
