Quick Answer
eSIM4 is the best-value eSIM for Malta, the cheapest choice at every size except 3GB, starting at $2.98 for 1GB. Jetpac beats it at 3GB, selling that size for $6.99 on a 7-day plan.
You’ll find both of those laid out honestly in the tables below.
Across the other six providers we compared, 1GB ranges from Roamless’s $3.95 up to Nomad’s $4.50, well above eSIM4’s $2.98. eSIM4 pulls further ahead on the bigger plans, where 20GB works out at $1.35 per GB, the lowest cost per GB on the page.
Need unlimited data? eSIM4 sells unlimited plans from 3 days at $9.98 to 30 days at $67.98, and its 15-day plan at $47.98 undercuts Saily’s $57.99. Prices verified in August.
Malta is small enough that most trips settle on 5GB rather than a giant plan. A week here is an Explore bus card, a Gozo ferry crossing and a lot of map-checking, not the kind of data burn a bigger country demands.
We compared all seven providers plan by plan. eSIM4 wins every tier except 3GB, which Jetpac shades on a 7-day plan. This page covers price only. For coverage, apps and support rankings, see our Best eSIM For Malta rankings.

What is a Malta eSIM, exactly?
You land at Malta International Airport in Luqa and need the Tallinja bus app open before you’ve even cleared the arrivals hall, whether you’re heading for a bus into Valletta or flagging a taxi.
A Malta eSIM handles that moment: a digital profile you load onto your phone ahead of time by scanning a QR code, no plastic card involved.
It picks up a Maltese carrier as soon as your phone finds a signal, and your physical SIM sits untouched in the tray, so your usual number keeps working the whole trip.
These are travel data eSIMs, built to keep maps, messaging and ferry bookings running without racking up roaming charges or standing in an airport SIM queue. Buy the plan before you fly and it’s ready the second you touch down.
Think of it as a digital SIM card, an embedded SIM built into the phone rather than a plastic chip you handle. A prepaid eSIM plan arrives by instant delivery to your inbox, so setup and activation are quick and straightforward.
You get instant access to a local network the moment you land, staying connected while traveling without opening the tray.
Malta price comparison: fixed data
eSIM4 is cheapest at 1GB, 2GB, 5GB, 10GB and 20GB in Malta. One rival shades a row: Jetpac undercuts 3GB at $6.99 against eSIM4’s $7.98, on a 7-day plan.
Every cheapest cell below is shaded green, including those two losses.

eSIM4’s fixed range tops out at 20GB. Jetpac sells a 15GB plan ($34.99) and Nomad a 50GB plan ($69.00) that eSIM4 doesn’t match.
Several cheap rival tiers run short validity too: Airalo’s 1GB and one of its 3GB plans last 3 days, its 5GB and 10GB start at 7 days, and Jetpac’s 3GB is a 7-day plan.
Prices checked in August against each provider’s own Malta pages, re-checked monthly.
5GB plan side by side
5GB is the size a typical Malta week settles on. A shorter bar means a cheaper plan.
Value check: price per GB
A low sticker price on a “cheapest” search can mislead, because a small plan often costs the most per gigabyte. Here’s what each size actually works out to per GB, eSIM4 against the cheapest rival at that size.
| Data | eSIM4 price | eSIM4 $/GB | Cheapest rival $/GB | Better value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1GB | $2.98 | $2.98 | $3.95 (Roamless) | eSIM4 |
| 2GB | $5.98 | $2.99 | $3.75 (aloSIM) | eSIM4 |
| 3GB | $7.98 | $2.66 | $2.33 (Jetpac) | Jetpac |
| 5GB | $11.98 | $2.40 | $2.59 (Roamless) | eSIM4 |
| 10GB | $18.98 | $1.90 | $2.20 (Saily) | eSIM4 |
| 20GB | $26.98 | $1.35 | $1.80 (Roamless) | eSIM4 |
$/GB is rounded to the nearest cent. eSIM4 gives the lowest cost per GB at every size except 3GB, bottoming out at $1.35/GB on the 20GB plan.
Malta price comparison: unlimited data
Only two providers sell unlimited data in Malta. eSIM4 sells six lengths, from 3 to 30 days, and Saily sells one 15-day plan.
At 15 days, the only length both sell, eSIM4’s $47.98 is $10.01 cheaper than Saily’s $57.99. eSIM4 is the only seller at every other length, from $9.98 for 3 days to $67.98 for 30.
| Duration | eSIM4 | Saily | Cheapest |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 days | $9.98 | – | eSIM4 (only option) |
| 5 days | $16.98 | – | eSIM4 (only option) |
| 7 days | $25.98 | – | eSIM4 (only option) |
| 10 days | $32.98 | – | eSIM4 (only option) |
| 15 days | $47.98 | $57.99 | eSIM4 $47.98 |
| 30 days | $67.98 | – | eSIM4 (only option) |
Every Malta eSIM provider compared
We compared eSIM4 against six rivals for Malta: Roamless for 30-day validity on every plan, Saily for its 15-day unlimited option, and aloSIM for a simple small starter size.
Also in the mix: Nomad for the largest fixed plan on the page, Airalo for the widest choice of validities per size, and Jetpac for the cheapest 3GB plan. Below, each one gets its own card so you can compare the details side by side.
Every one of these providers offers eSIM plans for Malta built a little differently, which is exactly why a side-by-side view of what each provider offers matters more than a single headline price.

How much data do you need in Malta?
Rough bands to start from: light use runs 1 to 3GB, a typical week runs 5 to 10GB, and heavy use tips into the 20GB plan or unlimited.
Malta trips lean on maps and transit apps more than translation, since English sits alongside Maltese as an official language, so most data goes on navigation, ferry bookings and photo uploads instead of translating menus.
Messaging apps like WhatsApp also lean on a steady, reliable data connection, so it’s worth checking your remaining data before a big day out traveling in Malta.
Light use: 1GB to 3GB
Enough for offline-capable maps around Valletta’s grid, checking the Tallinja app for bus times, and light messaging over a long weekend.
A typical week: 5GB to 10GB
Covers daily navigation, the Tallinja app tracking buses in real time, booking a fast-ferry slot to Gozo, and a steady stream of photo uploads. This is the most common choice for a one-week Malta trip.
Heavy use or a longer stay: 20GB or unlimited
Streaming, tethering a laptop, or holding the Blue Lagoon’s timed QR landing pass open at the jetty all add up fast. Digital nomads working remotely from a cafe in Sliema or St Julian’s will burn through data faster than a typical sightseeing day too.
eSIM4 sells unlimited plans from 3 days to 30, and its 20GB fixed plan at $26.98 is the cheapest large size on the page.
Malta’s mobile networks and coverage
Malta has three mobile network operators: GO, Melita and Epic.
GO is the incumbent and the largest of the three, with strong nationwide coverage across Malta and Gozo. Melita runs second, with roughly 30% market share and around 250,000 subscribers, offering 4G/LTE across both islands with headline speeds up to 1Gbps.
Epic, formerly Vodafone Malta, is the smallest at roughly 20% share and around 130,000 subscribers. Its 4G/LTE runs on the 800MHz band and reaches over 95% of the population indoors and outdoors across Malta and Gozo.
Malta is 316 square kilometers of islands, so there’s no rural-coverage story here the way there is in a bigger country. All three networks already reach essentially the whole territory, including Gozo.
The real differentiator is capacity under summer load. Signal holds up everywhere, but Sliema, St Julian’s, Valletta and the ferry terminals get dense in July and August, and that’s where speeds can sag.
Malta has reached 100% basic 5G population coverage, and eSIM4 connects to a major Maltese network with 4G LTE and 5G.
All three operators keep pace with modern data demands, so a reliable network in Malta isn’t hard to find on either island.
Why some cheap eSIMs feel slow or block apps
Some cheap eSIMs shave costs by sending your traffic through a data center in an entirely different country before it reaches you. That detour adds lag, and it can trip up services that check your location.
A banking app or booking site might assume you’re somewhere else entirely and block the request.
Worth checking before you buy: does the eSIM give you an actual Maltese connection? That’s what keeps a banking app, the Tallinja journey planner and the Blue Lagoon pass site behaving normally instead of throwing errors.
eSIM4 connects to a major Maltese network with 4G LTE and 5G, so data stays local.
Is unlimited data really unlimited?
For normal use, yes. Most unlimited travel eSIMs run on a fair usage policy: full speed up to a daily high-speed allowance, then a reduced speed for the rest of that day, resetting the next morning.
Ordinary maps, messaging, browsing and social apps won’t come close to hitting it. That’s how most unlimited data plans work, so you can enjoy unlimited data for everyday use without watching a counter.
Planning to stream in HD constantly or tether a laptop all day? Check the daily high-speed allowance before you buy. eSIM4’s unlimited plans here run from 3 to 30 days, listed above, and the fair-usage terms are shown at checkout.
eSIM vs airport SIM, pocket wifi and local SIM
Flying in from an EU or EEA country? You already roam at Malta rates under Roam Like At Home and may not need any of this. Travelers from the UK, US, Canada or Australia get no such deal.
Most UK networks brought back a daily EU roaming fee after Brexit, typically in the region of £2 to £3 a day, with O2 the main exception among the big four.
A week on that daily fee lands in about the same money as eSIM4’s 5GB plan at $11.98, and a fortnight costs more than eSIM4’s 20GB plan.
For everyone paying to stay connected, a travel eSIM installs before you fly, needs no deposit, and is live the moment you land. Here’s how the alternatives stack up.
- Airport or physical SIM. MLA is a single small terminal, so a counter queue can cost you the first hour before you’ve even left arrivals, and you have to pull your home SIM card out to fit the new one, losing your usual home number while it’s out.
- Pocket wifi. A rented router lets a few people share your internet, useful for a group, but it’s one more device to carry onto a Gozo ferry and hand back before a morning flight home, plus a daily rental fee.
- Local Malta eSIM. A local eSIM from GO, Melita or Epic can give you an actual Maltese number, handy for bookings, but it generally costs more than a travel eSIM for a week’s data and doesn’t come with your home number.
Most travelers come out ahead on both price and hassle with a travel eSIM, avoiding roaming fees while still using your physical SIM for calls back home.
If you do need a Maltese number, eSIM4’s Yabb app add-on supplies one as a paid extra, without a second SIM to carry.
Will your phone work with an eSIM in Malta?
Two things determine whether this works: your phone has to support eSIM, and it has to be unlocked from any carrier. Recent iPhones from the XS onward, Pixels from the 3 onward and Galaxy phones from the S20 onward generally qualify.
Check by looking for an “Add eSIM” option in Settings, or dial *#06# to find your device’s EID.
A phone still tied to a carrier plan needs unlocking first, since a locked device won’t accept a second eSIM profile. Nothing changes about your existing SIM card either way. It stays put in the tray, keeping your normal number and apps working while the Malta eSIM handles data.
How to set up your Malta eSIM
Get it installed before your flight, then switch it on once you touch down. It’s easy to install and only takes a few minutes start to finish.
- Purchase your eSIM plan and receive a QR code via email.
- Go to Settings, then Cellular or Mobile Data, then Add eSIM.
- Scan the QR code to install your eSIM and follow the prompts.
- On arriving in Malta, set the eSIM as your data line and turn on your eSIM’s data roaming.
Activate your Malta eSIM as soon as you land, and you’ll have a working connection within minutes.
How we compared
For each provider, we pulled the cheapest plan at every size and duration and set them side by side. Seven providers are included here, with USD prices gathered in August straight from each provider’s own Malta pages.
eSIMply is excluded from this comparison, since it’s a mirror of eSIM4 rather than a separate competitor, and free-trial tiers were left out too. Expect these numbers to get a fresh check every month.
Prices vary by provider even at the same data size, since plans start at different points and validity windows differ. This page tracks eSIM plans for Malta specifically, not eSIMs for other countries, so every figure above reflects Malta pricing only.
