What is a Sweden eSIM?

A Sweden eSIM is a prepaid data plan that you install on your phone. Using an eSIM is a simple way to get mobile data while traveling in Sweden. An eSIM is a digital SIM built into the phone.

Most travel eSIMs activate with a QR code or an app, so you skip physical SIM cards and airport queues. You buy the eSIM online and scan the QR code, and your eSIM connects to a Swedish network when you switch it on in Sweden.

Your home SIM stays in your phone, so you keep your usual number. Use your eSIM for maps, transit apps and messages, and you stay connected without your home carrier’s data roaming charges.

Stay connected: coverage in Sweden by network

eSIM4 gives you coverage in Sweden on the Telenor network.

Major mobile networks in Sweden include Telia, Tele2, Telenor and 3 (Tre). The other providers on this page list one or more of these, or Vodafone, and two list no network.

Telenor and Tele2 share one mobile network through their joint company, Net4Mobility. In September 2025, Tele2 said this network reaches 99.9% of people and 90% of Sweden’s area, from the mountains to the archipelago (Tele2 press release, in Swedish).

Sweden’s telecom regulator, PTS, found coverage for calls and basic internet on 90% of Sweden’s total area in autumn 2025, counting sea, mountains and lakes. Speeds of at least 50 Mbit/s reached 81% of populated areas (PTS press release, in Swedish). Signal can still drop in remote parts of the north and the mountains. Download offline maps over Wi-Fi before a trip to Lapland, and check your route on Telenor’s coverage map.

Local SIM card or travel eSIM in Sweden?

A travel eSIM is easier than a local SIM card for Sweden, because Swedish prepaid SIM cards must be registered with ID.

How Swedish prepaid SIM cards work

Since February 1, 2023, Swedish law says every prepaid SIM card (kontantkort) must be registered. At Comviq, a Swedish prepaid brand, you register online with BankID or photo ID. Or you register in a shop such as Pressbyrån, 7-Eleven or ICA with a passport, driving licence or ID card. You cannot top up the card until it is registered (Comviq prepaid page, in Swedish).

Why eSIM4 is easier

  • No ID check: buy an eSIM without ID online. eSIM4 sells a prepaid eSIM for Sweden from $2.98.
  • Set up at home: order an eSIM online and eSIM4 emails your QR code straight away, so you install it before you fly.
  • Works on landing: switch the line on when you arrive. Your plan starts when you activate it.
  • Nothing to carry: a rented pocket Wi-Fi router needs charging and returning. An eSIM lives on your phone.
  • Calls and texts: use the Yabb app to call and text real phone numbers.

Roaming when traveling to Sweden: do you need a travel eSIM?

You need a travel eSIM if you are visiting Sweden on a phone plan from outside the EU, or if your EU plan gives you little data abroad.

Sweden is in the EU, so EU roam like at home rules cover phone plans from EU and EEA operators there. Even then, operators “may apply limits on how much data you can use at your domestic price” (Your Europe). Plans from the United Kingdom, the US and other countries follow their own operator’s roaming rates.

An eSIM4 plan gives you a separate prepaid data line from $2.98. Turn off data roaming on your home SIM, and your home plan’s roaming charges no longer apply to your data.

Calls and SMS in Sweden: eSIM with a phone number?

eSIM4’s Sweden plans are data-only eSIM plans with no Swedish phone number, so you call and text through apps.

  • WhatsApp, Telegram and FaceTime: you can use apps like these for voice calls and messaging over your eSIM data.
  • Yabb app: call and text real phone numbers over your data (Yabb calling, Yabb SMS).
  • Yabb virtual number: a second number for sending and receiving texts (Yabb virtual number).
  • Your own number: your home SIM stays on in dual SIM mode, so calls and texts to your usual number still reach you. Your home carrier may charge for them.

A Swedish phone number needs a local prepaid SIM, which you must register with ID (see above).

Will your phone work with an eSIM in Sweden?

Your phone works with a Sweden eSIM if it is eSIM compatible and unlocked. Apple says eSIM works on iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR or later (Apple Support). Many recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones support eSIM too.

Before you fly to Sweden, you can check compatibility in two ways. Dial *#06#. If an EID number shows, your phone supports eSIM on most models, and our EID guide explains more. You can also look for “Add eSIM” in your phone’s cellular settings, or find your model on our eSIM phone list.

A phone bought on a carrier contract may be locked. Ask your carrier to unlock it before you travel.

How to install and activate your eSIM for Sweden

Install your eSIM before your trip using Wi-Fi at home, then activate it when you land in Sweden.

  1. Order your eSIM on esim4.com. eSIM4 emails your QR code straight away.
  2. Connect to Wi-Fi, since you need an internet connection to install it. On iPhone, go to Settings, then Cellular, then Add eSIM. On Android, open your SIM or mobile network settings and add an eSIM.
  3. Scan the QR code and follow the prompts to set up your eSIM profile.
  4. When you land, turn on your new eSIM line, its cellular data and data roaming.
  5. Turn off data roaming on your home SIM to avoid roaming charges.

You can activate an eSIM for Sweden as soon as you land, and your plan’s days start when you activate it.

If your Sweden eSIM will not connect

If your Sweden eSIM will not connect, check the eSIM line and data roaming first. Then make your phone search for a network again.

  1. Make sure the eSIM is your mobile data line and data roaming is on for it.
  2. Turn airplane mode on, then off, so your phone searches for a network again.
  3. If your phone does not pick a network, choose Telenor by hand in your network settings.
  4. On some Android phones, you may need to enter the APN by hand if data still does not work.
  5. If eSIM activation still fails at Arlanda, use the airport’s free Wi-Fi to contact support. It gives you 1 hour straight away, and 2 more hours once you confirm your email (Swedavia).
