Will your phone work with an eSIM in Hong Kong?
You need an eSIM-compatible, carrier-unlocked phone. Most iPhone, Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy models from the last few years qualify. Dial *#06# or check Settings for an “Add eSIM” option to confirm.
If your phone is still tied to a home carrier contract, get it unlocked before you fly, since a locked phone won’t accept a new eSIM.

How to set up your Hong Kong eSIM
Install it before you fly and switch it on when you land. The whole process takes a few minutes.
- Buy your plan and you’ll get a QR code by email.
- Go to Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) > Add eSIM.
- Scan the QR code and follow the prompts to install it.
- When you land at Hong Kong International Airport, set the eSIM as your data line and turn on data roaming for it.
If your Hong Kong eSIM will not connect
Most connection problems clear up in a minute or two. Work through these steps in order.
- Reach the arrivals hall at HKG, since a signal search can be patchy while you’re still on the plane or taxiing.
- Toggle airplane mode on and off to force your phone to search for a network again.
- Check that the eSIM is set as your data line and that data roaming is switched on for it.
- If it still hasn’t picked one, manually select a Hong Kong network in Settings.
- Switch from 5G to 4G LTE if you’re in a busy area where 5G is congested.
- On some Android phones, you may need to enter the APN manually if data still won’t flow.
If you’re travelling with one phone, save the QR code as a photo before you go. iPhone lets you long-press to add it later, and Android can scan it straight from your gallery with Google Lens.
